Workshops and Professional Development

We offered a range of learning and professional development workshops and activities to increase the capability in the VCSE sector to support and nurture the workforce, cultivating talent, and sharing insight, tools and approaches.

We commissioned research into our sector’s diversity, pay and conditions. We reported on our findings and used them to shape our future work. You can find snapshots of some of the research we’ve conducted further down this page.

GM Workforce and Recruitment Hubs

With our Local Infrastructure colleagues, we created the Greater Manchester Workforce Hub has been created for the VCSE sector, by the VCSE sector. The Workforce Hub is a go-to resource for all VCSE workforce needs in Greater Manchester. Explore HR, recruitment, talent development, diversity and inclusion, leadership, and wellbeing through networks, learning opportunities, and comprehensive toolkits.

In conjunction, we launched the GM Recruitment Hub – a job board for all VCSE vacancies across Greater Manchester. You’ll be able to discover diverse roles spanning all 10 boroughs. From fundraising and marketing to campaigning, project management, and leadership positions.

HR Support

We’ll be increasing the capacity of VCSE organisations to attract, retain and develop their workforce by providing information and resources such as information on HR Support Providers with VCSE sector expertise and HR Policy standard templates.

The GM Workforce and Recruitment Hubs are now live

The 2019 VCSE workforce capability report, commissioned by GM Health and Social Care Partnership, highlighted issues, and recommendations across 6 key areas: HR support, Recruitment, Inclusion, Personal Development, Leadership Development and Wellbeing.

The 10GM VCSE Workforce Development project has implemented the recommendations of this report, working with the VCSE sector’s Local Infrastructure Organisations in GM, to establish a collective workforce development hub built purposely for the VCSE workforce so that we can become:

Contribute to shaping a stronger VCSE workforce

10GM’s VCSE Workforce Development Programme is conducting a series of surveys on HR, Payroll and EAP systems and services used within Greater Manchester’s VCSE Sector.

The ‘State of the GM VCSE Sector 2021’ report shows there is a real need for greater support around HR in our organisations. In response to this research, the GM VCSE Workforce Development Programme (led by 10GM) is gathering information about what workforce services are working well for your organisation and what other personnel/workforce support needs there are in our sector.

Pay and Conditions Survey

Research on the GM VCSE Workforce showed that salary is one of the most prominent barriers to recruitment in the sector. Salaries are not representative of the skills and knowledge needed for the role, and record levels of inflation and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis is continuing to put financial pressure on VCSE organisations – it’s no surprise that salary expectations are more crucial to jobseekers than ever.

In response to this research, we gathered information about pay and conditions in Greater Manchester’s VCSE Organisations. This survey helped us to understand where the sector stands with pay and conditions compared to other sectors, it will help drive improvements, and provide support for the sector with salary benchmarking.

Background of the programme

Our Greater Manchester State of the VCSE Sector report 2021 identified that there were a total of 75,610 paid employees (equal to 46,122 FTE) in the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector in Greater Manchester. These paid staff sat alongside a total of 496,609 volunteers (including committee members and trustees). Most of our organisations face workforce challenges and also want to show leadership by being inclusive and supportive employers.

In late 2019, we worked with NHS colleagues to increase our understanding of the VCSE sector’s workforce and in particular how well-being is supported. Below is a short video in which one of our 10GM Directors, Mike Wild, discusses some of the issues around workforce wellbeing in our sector – and why it’s important that we pay attention to it.
